Dear Professor Stemberg,

My name is Afsana Akter. I am currently studying at Hostos Community College in Aging and Health Studies and will be earning my associate degree in this May. I am a self-motivated and disciplined person who are always keen to skilled myself by learning new things. I was born and raised in Bangladesh. In 2018, I moved to the USA with my family. I need to face some challenges in my life when I first move in because I had language barrier, cultural differences, and lifestyle. Gradually, I started to take the opportunity to enroll few ESL classes so that I can overcome the language barrier. I love to do dancing and woodwork. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with friends, sometime cooking, listening music and dancing. After completing my associate degree, I want to start pursuing my career in Gerontological nursing. My long-term goal is by gaining experience in the field of Gerontology.  I would like to collaborate with older adults to focus on their process of aging, protection, promotion, restoration, and optimization of health and functioning. In summer, I worked at a camp for elementary children as well. By working with them, I learned how to make connection with them. I always wanted to understand people in every aspect because my profession will require better understanding, patience, attention to patient and needs for clients and the ability to support for their cognitive and physical issues. As a geriatric nurse, I want to myself who can give people a realization that aging is an unavoidable process. In our society, when a person reached 65, they are called “old” traditionally. They need to understand that when they are getting closer to this age, they still have their life ahead. Their life perception also has impacted their psychological and physical health. In addition, there is always a direct connection between successful aging and maintaining strong relationships with family, friends, neighbors, spouse, and others. As a future nurse, I must be aware of all psychological, biological, and social processes that occur during the aging process. In addition, I need to understand that my patients can suffer because of various chronic illness and long-term functional limitations. I need to involve with elderly communities to understand them. As a caregiver, I need to have direct hands-on older adults in primary care. They should have the knowledge about the diseases process, the risk factors, sign, and symptoms. I need to give them realization that it is important to understand the aging progress. I would like to engage in counselling, communication, collaboration, and teaching in a manner and reflects caring, advocacy, ethics, and professional standards. I wish to work in a senior position, contributing to the betterment of my workplace and society. Therefore, I am committed to work hard at college and looking for opportunities that could help me make my goals.

Sincerely,

Afsana Akter
